Actor James Michael Tyler, known for his role as ‘Gunther’ in the series Friends, died at 59.
In an interview with NBC’s “Today,” actor James Michael Tyler revealed suffering from stage four prostate cancer in June. The actor had received the diagnosis in September 2018, after a routine examination.
Since then, cancer has affected her bones, and she has been unable to walk.
“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh Friend), from the hit series ‘Friends,’ but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband,” his family said in a statement.
“Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures if you met him once you made a friend for life.”, according to The Guardian.
‘Friends’ stars Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston paid tribute to the late James Michael Tyler.
Courteney Cox, who played ‘Monica Geller’ on the hit-NBC show, honored Tyler on Sunday with an Instagram post.
“The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you. Rest In peace, James.”
Jennifer Aniston, who played ‘Rachel Green’ on the hit-NBC show, paid tribute to James Michael Tyler, who played ‘Gunther’ with an Instagram post as well.
“Friends would not have been the same without you. Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed.”
‘Gunther’ had also appeared in “Friends: The Reunion.”
In May, Tyler appeared in the series “Friends: The Reunion” but could not attend in person due to his health problems. Appearing instead through Zoom, he said: “It was the most memorable ten years of my life, honestly.”
“I could not have imagined just a better experience. All these guys were fantastic and just a joy to work with. It felt very, very special.”
Tyler said he hadn’t revealed his illness before because “I didn’t want it to be like ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.”
